The trail to Heliotrope Ridge and Coleman Glacier is located in the upper North Cascades, and doubles as an access to a climbing route for Baker, thus, offers some of the best and closest views of Mount Baker. The trail is fairly easy, only 5.5 miles round trip with a elevation gain of 1400 ft. and a highest point of 5100 ft. The trail begins in the woods and remains so for the majority of the hike. At around two miles the trail passes the former site of Kulshan Cabin, which is now just a campsite. Past this, the trail intersects with the climbers route up Baker, stay left for Heliotrope Ridge. Finally, the trails breaks out of the woods and almost immediately meets Heliotrope Creek. The creek poses a challenge for some, the water can be high, fast moving, and very difficult to cross. Trekking poles are a life saver here, as I was the only one able to cross the creek without getting anything wet, even my feet. Without poles, rock hopping isn't much of an option, and most hikers will choose to walk across, feet fully submerged. I saw some smart hikers swapping their hiking boots for sandals here, and then continuing to walk through the water. Whatever you choose, just be aware injuries happen quickly so come prepared. There are three major creek crossing in a short span of trail. However, after the crossing you are quickly rewarded with views of Coleman Glacier from Heliotrope Ridge. Before you span bright blue seracs. The ice spikes continue up towards Baker. Just remember this is a glacier, so as tempting as it might be, do not walk on it, unless you have the proper gear. We sat and ate lunch while we watched the icy blue mounster sparkle in the sunlight and listened to it crack and creak. We were also entertained by a few Marmots who came out to play near us. The hike was a fun and relatively easy, but very rewarding.
